Danny Gold taught Champagne 101 this morning.

Champagne/Sparkling Wines in order from dry to sweet:
Brut Natural
Extra Brut
Brut
Extra Dry
Dry
Demi Sec

Champagne comes from Champagne, France all others are Sparkling. If you see a bottle of non French Champagne marked Champagne it must be followed by the term “Methode Champenoise” meaning they make it in the same process.

Cava is the equivalent to Spanish bubbly done “Methode Champenoise”
Prosseco is the equivalent to Italian bubbly done “Methode Champenoise”

As a cooking school director and food show host, people often expect me to create elaborate food for parties. Honestly, I don’t have any more time than the next person and fussy food simply doesn’t fit into my lifestyle. But I try not to sacrifice taste and style. Using really quality ingredients and then presenting them beautifully takes the pressure off. This morning I brought an antipasta tray to Jeff and Jenn. I put it together with “off the shelf” ingredients from The Party Source. Try it next time you’re looking for easy but impactful party food.

Want to make great burgers at home? Follow these tips for a great burger every time!

Selection Always check the expiration date and choose meat without any tears in the packaging. The meat should be red, with the fat marbling through out it. Sometimes you see hamburger that’s a dark purple-gray color. That comes from a pigment called myoglobin. It’s normally a dark grayish-purple but when it comes in contact with air, it reacts by turning a deep red color. Meats that are vacuum-packed have not been exposed to enough oxygen to turn red. Since we consumers like the bright red color better than the purple gray, groceries sell meat wrapped in a plastic film that’s oxygen permeable. The air comes through and turns the meat that pretty red color.

Storage: Remember, the grocery stores the meat in packaging that allows the oxygen to come through. That’s precisely why, when you store it, you should always [Read more →]

1) Loyalty Cards: If you don’t have one, get one. It’s the single easiest way to save money on grocery items on sale each week. Never leave the store without swiping your card at check-out.

2) Electronic Coupons: Online coupon sites like www.Shortcuts.com allow shoppers to load coupons onto their store loyalty cards for savings without printing or clipping. Just click the coupons you want and they’re automatically redeemed when you use your loyalty card.

3) Buy One Get One Free: These buy-one-get-one sales are great on their own, but you can also use one coupon for each item. So if you get two items, make sure to use two coupons.
