Healthcastle.com has some eye opening info about movie theater snacks…..read on for the real horror story- and some solutions for a “happy ending”.
Cheers!

Popcorn Popcorn is considered a whole grain, so it contains many beneficial nutrients, like B Vitamins and fiber. It’s one of the healthiest snacks available at the movie theater - but not if it’s drowning in butter or caramel! Three cups of popcorn is counted as one Food Guide Pyramid serving. But the large popcorn you’re getting in your value combo is a whopping 170 oz (at least 21 cups) of popcorn. That’s 1500 calories - within 2 hours! It is still gigantic even if you split it with your movie buddy.

Soda: That large soda gives you 80 g of sugar (equivalent to 16 tsp). Ordering a diet version will save you from drinking empty calories, but it is still no better to drink 32 oz of artificially flavored and colored water.

Candy: Concession-sized candy is getting bigger- and lloaded with about 440 calories per box! To put that in perspective, for 440 calories, you could have easily eaten a whole meal - like a signature Subway Club 6-inch sandwich (320 calories) plus a large banana (120 calories).

Surviving the Blockbuster Season
Skip the Value Combo You don’t gain more value by packing more fat around your waistline. So order your snacks with the smallest portion possible.

Love your Gum If your mouth is busy chewing gum, you won’t have time to munch on anything else.

Be a Sneaker Although it’s against movie theatre rules, try sneaking in small snacks and drinks that are healthy to munch on. Examples include Trail mix Low-fat granola bars Baked chips Fruit Real fruit juice Low-fat milk Bottled water

1) Loyalty Cards: If you don’t have one, get one. It’s the single easiest way to save money on grocery items on sale each week. Never leave the store without swiping your card at check-out.

2) Electronic Coupons: Online coupon sites like www.Shortcuts.com allow shoppers to load coupons onto their store loyalty cards for savings without printing or clipping. Just click the coupons you want and they’re automatically redeemed when you use your loyalty card.

3) Buy One Get One Free: These buy-one-get-one sales are great on their own, but you can also use one coupon for each item. So if you get two items, make sure to use two coupons.

I try to take my vitamins every day. I take a multi, a fish oil, vitamin C, an 81mg aspirin and vitamin D. Vitamin D is something I added this year. I used to believe that we got enough D from sunlight and fortified foods like milk but then I read an article about the fact that most of the nation is vitamin D deficient. Jean Carper explains why we need to take D supplements:

Cuts heart attacks- men with low levels suffer twice as many heart attacks
Curbs cancer- 2000IU daily may reduce breast cancer by half and colon cancer by two-thirds
Prevents diabetes- men with vitamin D rich blood were 72% less apt to develop diabetes
Boosts the brain- helps fend off depression and dementia

How much each day? Kids need 1000 IU and adults need 1000-2000 IU.
Take care-

Clothes: get the best prices Thursday evenings. Retailers are expecting new shipments and want to move merchandise.

Travel: check the individual airline sites first. They’re offering exclusive deals to avoid paying commissions to agents and travel sites.

Furniture: Buy direct from the manufacturer for prices up to 50-80% off retail.
